This summer is the “last” one before BOTH of the kids start school in the fall. It’s crazy how fast time flies! I decided that we are going to make the most of it before we are back on a school schedule. We have some fun things planned and some days open for just lounging around. I want to find the happy medium so we aren’t falling into the “busy” trap, but we are still crossing things off of our summer bucket list. How am I keeping the balance (or at least, really trying) without feeling completely drained at the end of each day?
My kids do well with some structure, but I don’t want to overwhelm them. We leave plenty of time for rest, especially after a jam packed day! They need the downtime to recoup, and I need it to keep up with the house and other things. Would they love to have a sleepover plus a fun filled day plus another activity? I am sure. But the meltdowns from overscheduling are not always worth it.
Keep it Simple
Some of our most fun days are just staying home! The kids have had their little pool out, we bought a few cheap squirt guns and they are easily content for an hour or more. Their imaginations run wild and it’s fun to overhear their pretend play. Brayden has learned to ride his bike with no training wheels, they like to help me take care of my flower pots and tomatoes, and we are really loving our backyard this year.
Always have snacks/drinks
No one wants to be “hangry”, so no matter WHERE we are, I am always sure to have snacks. They help keep our energy levels up so we can enjoy the summer sunshine. One of my personal favorites is the V8 VFusion+Energy drinks. I have been really conscious about not drinking my calories away, so these are the perfect choice at only 50 calories per can. They come in yummy flavors like Pomegranate Blueberry, Orange Pineapple, Peach Mango, Tomato, and Black Cherry and they are the perfect drink for a hot day, especially after chasing the kids around the yard! With natural energy from green tea, a serving of fruit AND vegetable, and yummy flavors, they are the perfect drink to take along on a busy day or grab out of the fridge when we are home. I like having a 6 pack in the fridge in the house AND out in the shed so I can grab and go.
Get their input
Ask your kids what they want to do this summer! They might have some fun ideas that you didn’t think of, and don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with the stress that being busy over the summer can bring. Instead, think of it as a learning experience, and really allow yourself to let your kids imagination and creativity shine through. I am really, really trying to do better with this! It’s hard but I know the payoff is well worth it! I listed most of our summer plans on our bucket list, but a couple others they want to do is finger painting (because they did it at my sister’s), a trip to the zoo, and homemade play-doh. I might just have to embrace the mess! That’s what summer is for, right?
