Kenley loves to be in the kitchen with me, whether it’s baking or creating, she is never too far from me when I am in there. Since she is only in school for half of a day, I have been trying to remain focused on intentionally spending that time with her in the midst of doing things around the house. Last week, I surprised her and had her help me make this five minute microwave playdoh. My kids love playdoh, but it is pretty much the bane of my existence. In my quest to be more of a “yes” mom instead of one that always says no, I decided to let go and let their creativity have some time to shine! This five minute microwave playdoh is quick and easy, and uses ingredients I already had in my kitchen. We have already made another batch since I took these photos! It has clearly been a hit in our house.
Here’s what you will need:
1 cup water
1 tbsp vegetable oil
food coloring
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 cup flour
In a large microwave safe bowl, combine the water, oil, and food coloring.
Then add the flour and cream of tartar. Whisk well, you don’t want the dough to be lumpy.
Once the consistency is smooth and there are no lumps, cover the bowl with a paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds.
Take it out and scrape along the edges and give it a quick stir. Cover and microwave for another 30 seconds. Scrape, stir, then another 30 seconds. Repeat until the total time in the microwave is 2 minutes. Then it should start looking like this:
I had to microwave ours for an additional minute so it was completely cooked.
Once the playdoh is more solid than liquid, remove from the microwave, and scrape onto a piece of wax paper so it can cool completely. Some microwaves may require additional cooking time.
Once it has cooled, it is ready to play with! Five minute microwave playdoh is perfect for a last minute activity that will help your kids unleash some creativity.
It’s so important to let kids be kids. The world has so much to offer them, and sometimes exploring it all can be a messy job! Now that we live in the country, I find that their explorations tend to be messier. It’s hard for me, I will be the first to admit, because I like a clean space! That’s not to say that it’s never messy– there is always a plethora of messy tables, messy rooms, and of course, messy clothes. I just have to let that stuff go sometimes and be ready to deal with the messes when they are done.
