Emma Colchester arrives to New South Wales just thirty years after it has been settled (1821), the purpose of which is to have an arranged marriage. She traveled there on a convict ship, and when their ship wrecks, she is rescued by a convict.
Her groom to be is Gideon Quinn, arranged by her aunt Adelaide. After a turn of events, Emma realizes that her aunt’s arrangement is a false motive, as Gideon turns out to be old enough to be her grandfather. He refuses to release Emma from her betrothal, and she is stuck with him, thousands of miles away from home.
Emma becomes smitten with the convict that saved her, Tobias Freeman. However, she has promised to marry Gideon, and has been forced to keep that promise. Gideon holds the power of life or death over Tobias, but Tobias seeks out Emma, trying to get close to her. Emma knows she has to marry Gideon to secure her family’s financial future, but there is something so intriguing about the man who saved her life.
Will Tobias and Emma find a way to be together? Will Tobias’ perseverance win Emma’s love? What will the repercussions be?
This was a great historical novel, an incredible love story, and I did NOT see the ending coming. It is definitely worth the read!
