I had never heard of Melanie Shankle until my friend Mary recommended this book on her blog. Now, I can’t get enough!
The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life by Melanie Shankle is a bunch of short stories about her experiences in marriage. I laughed out loud at most of this book, only because I swear I could have written it myself. Hilarious. From house remodeling (when her hubby says oh, it won’t make a mess and it for real does) to trying to bounce back after having a child, this book covers the highs and lows of marriage. It’s also hilariously one sided, much like any book I would write about marriage. It’s a beautiful reminder that love has several forms (my favorites are her Old Love and New Love) and that the fairy tale we desire is not reality.
It’s funny, heartwarming, yet she speaks so much truth! It was like sitting with a group of girlfriends laughing at all that marriage entails. It’s a good thing we can laugh, right?
Definitely a must read– and go check out her other book, Sparkly Green Earrings. It’s next on my list!
