Admittedly, I never thought much about Tuesday’s before I read this book. Tuesday’s were just another day of the week that brought to-do lists & routines. It was just another day of tasks to be completed and babies/toddlers/preschoolers to tend to. Tuesday’s meant meal planning, grocery shopping, house cleaning, and trying to keep my head above water in the midst of life’s demands. Each day is something to be thankful for, and it’s a new chance for me to meet God right in the midst of a busy life. Emily encourages us to find rest and peace in the midst of our chaotic life, and tells it in such a way that it hit me over the head. Hard.
As I made my way through Simply Tuesday by Emily P. Freeman, I could sense my perspective changing. Tuesday’s could be more than just to-do lists and child rearing. They could be days spent fulfilling my role as a wife and mother. Tuesday’s could be the day I embrace the work in front of me and see it as a part of something bigger. It was a reminder that each day is a gift and I should treat it as such.
“Most of life happens, not in brightness or in darkness, but in the medium light of a regular day. And all those daily things – the email inbox, the cluttered surfaces, the bag of old clothes, the deadlines, and the appointments – aren’t to be set aside by those who hope to live a faithful life. Rather, embracing all of these is part of what makes a faithful life.” (from the Introduction, pg. 16-17).
Admittedly, sometimes my soul longs for something more important, more valuable. We live in a world where people seem to always be doing more, doing better, and resting less. I fall victim to that. I want my mark on the world to be important and significant! God has other plans for our lives, in that He wants us to draw into him, not into the world. He wants to meet with us in the ordinary parts of our lives.
This is a book you simply must read. I found myself highlighting passages, writing notes, and re-reading several parts of this book. Now that I am getting ready to send both kids off to school, I needed the reminder that it is the little things that truly matter. It’s making sure that their needs are met, no matter how small they may seem. It’s the little things that make the biggest impact, and I am much more conscious of that now than I ever have been. My purpose IS great even if there are days where I am feeling like I don’t know what it is. God called me to be right here in this moment, and what a blessing that is!
